The Shaumbra Launch Pad – This month’s webcast marked the first time we had three people on the Launch Pad. A bear helped carry ammunition for Polish troops during World War II. The bear - named Voytek - was adopted in the Middle East by Polish troops in 1943, becoming much more than a mascot. Voytek - known as the Soldier Bear - was found wandering in the hills of Iran by Polish soldiers in 1943. When Polish forces were deployed to Europe the only way to take the bear with them was to "enlist" him. So he was given a name, rank and number and took part in the Italian campaign. The soldiers who were stationed with him say that he was easy to get along with. "He was just like a dog - nobody was scared of him," said Polish veteran Augustyn Karolewski, who still lives near the site of the camp. "He liked a cigarette, he liked a bottle of beer - he drank a bottle of beer like any man."

The age at which we are most vulnerable to depression is 44, while a 70-year-old who is physically fit is, on average, as happy and mentally healthy as a 20-year-old.

Women are banned by law from Mount Athos in Greece, home to 20 monasteries. Four Moldovan women accidentally breached a ban dating back to 1045 when they were dropped off on the Greek monastic peninsula of Mount Athos. They told police they had sailed from Turkey after paying $6,300 to two Ukrainian people smugglers, but were unaware they were breaking Greek law. Police held the group, and one officer said "they were forgiven" by the monks. The four women, aged between 27 and 32, and a Moldovan man, aged 41, were discovered by the monks at the weekend. "They told police and the monks they were sorry but they couldn't have known this was a no-women area," a police officer told Reuters. Under Greek law, breaching the ban can lead to a jail sentence. Women - even many female domestic animals - have not been allowed on the mountain since a decree banning women was issued by Byzantine Emperor Constantine Monomachos in 1045.

Syria has the world's largest restaurant, seating up to 6,014 diners. The 6,014-seat Damascus Gate has taken the accolade from a Bangkok eatery serving a mere 5,000 diners. The crucial test for Guinness World Record officials is that all the tables are properly catered for, and they likened the Syrian kitchen to a "mini-factory". Located in a Damascus suburb, the family-owned restaurant called Bawabet Dimashq in Arabic, was opened more than three years ago. During the busy summer months up to 1,800 staff are employed in the 54,000 sq-m dining area and 2,500 sq-m kitchen. The open air area is complete with waterfalls, fountains and replicas of archaeological ruins for the summer, and there are separate themed sections for Chinese and Indian cuisine. "The secret of feeding so many people is to divide up the restaurant into smaller sections and every person in the restaurant has their own task to fulfil," Mr Samman told the BBC. The kitchen is a like a production line, he says, where one chef can prepare 25-30 helpings of popular dishes, such as hummus, in one minute - that's one bowl every two seconds.
