Many Shaumbra have been through the Dreamwalker Death, Birth and Ascension Schools or workshops. With DreamWalker Death and DreamWalker Birth particularly, there is a facilitation component. We can, if we choose, become a DreamWalker Death facilitator, and (or) a spiritual birth assistant, called an adoula. How to take what we have learned and form that into a facilitation practice can be a challenging step.

I knew in the first few moments while attending the DreamWalker Birth Transition school in Taos that I had not only stepped into the information that I had been seeking on a personal level, but into an opportunity to teach and facilitate what I consider to be an extremely important work. I came away from the school, however, without the faintest idea how to form a practice from what I had been taught.

Because I had an existing practice in an energy balancing modality, I was experienced in working with clients. I discontinued that practice, and began working with the New Energy. Shortly after I came home from Taos, I had a conversation with a young woman who I had known for many years. She was married with one child, and was going through a spiritual awakening. As I began to talk about the adoula work, she became very interested because she and her husband had decided to have another child. She wanted a different experience from the one that she had bringing in their first baby. I began to work with her shortly after our conversation, and soon after that with her husband.

I felt strongly that I should use the work with this couple as my “internship.” I would not charge them for the adoula work, but as an energetic exchange, I would use the experience that I gained by working with them to establish credibility and to help promote my practice. I also asked that I be able to use the copious notes that I took for the many months that I worked with them for future publication.

With my next clients, I was able to refer to the experiences I had working with my first couple. I felt that I was better able to charge for my services as I had taken those first clients through the entire process – from preconception through the nine months afterwards. That internship worked well for me. However, as each practitioner sets up a practice, it is important that they shape it as how they intuit it to be best for them and for their clients.

I have taken steps to present myself as the professional that I am. I have a website, business cards, brochures and now a proven clientele. With my first and second clients, I was in the hospital with them. I interfaced with doctors, labor and delivery nurses and other staff and had the opportunity to tell them that I was a spiritual adoula.

In promoting my practice, I initially found that explaining the work of a spiritual birth assistant was challenging. I have also found that the clients have a difficult time as well relating the adoula work to others. They are realizing that some of the difficulty lies in the fact that much of what happens during the sessions is experiential. What occurs on an energetic and feeling level is sometimes hard to explain to others. It is the difference between being in a school or workshop and hearing the words of Adamus and actually doing the work. In the DreamWalker Birth Transitions School I had only an inkling of how a session with a client might feel. For instance, I knew that I would make a connection with the incoming child, but I didn’t realize until I worked with clients how tender and deeply moving that moment of connection was.

It is helpful to come up with a clear, concise definition of your work - in your own words - when you explain the adoula practice. Your clients might also benefit from having something to say to others about what they are experiencing by working with an adoula.

Forming my spiritually based practice has involved a great deal of trust. I trust that I found my way to this work because it was a beautiful potential that I brought with me to this lifetime. I implicitly trust those amazing energies and beings on the other side who assist me every step and every breath of the way as I work with my clients. And finally, I trust that in the New Energy, I will intuit the answers to questions that arise, and have the tools that I need to balance professionalism and spirituality as I build my business.
