What I want to share this month feels so broad and far-reaching that distilling it into a reasonable amount of words has felt rather daunting. On the other hand, it’s very simple, and nothing we haven’t already heard. But, in this slowed-down reality, it takes a while for a human’s experience to catch up with the concept, which means my visceral understanding of this topic is very fresh. And the more I explore it, the more I realize how it is the primary factor of abundance, health, forgiveness, allowing, creation, magic and so much more. The topic is, simply, receiving.

I got the concept of receiving ages ago, even wrote about it here, but it recently landed in a whole new way, triggered by a very mundane activity. I was with Geoff, Linda and the crew at the studio in Louisville, recording a new production with Adamus. We’d just finished lunch and I was making coffee before the final session. The fancy espresso machine in the Masters Club can “pull” two shots at a time, but sometimes I sneak in one more shot from the same basket of coffee grounds for “just a little more.” Pondering whether I wanted to commit such a brewing offense this time, a mysterious kernel of knowing dropped in: I wouldn’t need more if I fully received what I already had.

I stopped, cup in hand, and closed my eyes. Sensing there was a whole forest of wisdom in that little acorn, I wanted to stay in the moment, breathe it in, write it down, explore its nooks and crannies, get into its roots. But the production desk was calling, so I tucked it away for later. Over the next few days, it started rewriting my life.

Here’s what I found, and although a lot of it is shared in the context of food and body issues, it can be applied to everything.

Like many of us, I have been in an ever-present struggle with my physical self, particularly with extra weight and general aches and pains, and I confess to trying many ways of “fixing” it (even though I’m not supposed to...). Some “solutions” have given a temporary measure of success, but all of them have eventually been rejected by my body. It seems body issues are one of the last areas of “suffering” in my entire existence, particularly when it comes to food. (Can we just eliminate the need to to eat?) It turns out, however, there’s one thing I haven’t done, and that is actually receive what I eat. Oh, I’ve done plenty to control, limit, manage, plan and occasionally gorge on food, but never simply receive it.

There are plenty of reasons for this, a primary one being that humans just don’t receive very well. (Why that is would take a whole other article.) Also, as a child, my own body’s feedback was overridden by hunger and/or obedience, until habit, anxiety and beliefs dictated my intake more than anything else. But these days, I am much better at listening to what my body wants, so why the ongoing imbalance? Why the grumbles and bloating and aching and weight, no matter what I eat or don’t?

Well, thanks to that little cup of espresso, it finally dawned on me that the act of receiving my food has been non-existent. (Which makes me wonder, what else have I not been receiving?) I’ve tried to help my body “accept” whatever I eat, tried to “let it serve me,” but that was just mental gymnastics. Then I’d go back to something like “no carbs,” which did lessen the aches and pains, but then dear body felt forced and deprived. It was one power game after another. But then, if I let go and eat whatever I want, the weight creeps up and up and up. It has felt like an impossible catch-22 for years.

This “receive” message from Self was something new; head-smackingly obvious, but fresh. So, that evening I decided to indulge myself at a nice restaurant, eat whatever I wanted, and receive every bit of it. To my surprise, I felt Adamus join me for the first course, providing a bit of tutoring on how to receive the food. “It can almost be orgasmic” he said at one point. That made me giggle out loud, but it turns out he was absolutely right! (Why am I surprised?) Eating slowly, sensually savoring every bite without regret or guilt meant that my simple meal was an incredible experience. If I hadn’t been out in public, I would have gotten even more immersed in it. (Taking the food or drink into my mouth, feeling it, tasting it, experiencing it, finally allowing it to enter my body, receiving it, letting it fill me – well, you can see how one might get a bit carried away…) Trust me, it is very, very sensual to truly open up and receive. (It reminds me of the restaurant scene in the movie When Harry Met Sally. Maybe it really was about the food instead of her faking an orgasm. Maybe the other customer nailed it when she told the waitress, “I’ll have what she’s having!”)

The last few days I’ve been putting this into constant practice, particularly with food but also with everything else, and I’m beginning to see how “receiving” might be the key to everything Adamus has been saying!

If everything is my energy serving me – whether as abundance, food, love, or anything else – there’s nothing to do but receive. It’s when I don’t allow that pleasure for myself because of guilt, body shame, suffering, confusion, frustration with being physical and so on, that things stay out of balance. When I am truly receiving, everything in every moment becomes enough, and nothing needs to be hoarded or stored as fat or any other kind of surplus. (If I shovel in all the “right” food but don’t receive it, what’s a body supposed to do with it anyway?)

We have many senses or ways of perceiving, but to me, “perception” implies the awareness going “from me” to something “out there.” On the other hand, sensory reception implies awareness going the other way; receiving instead of sending, allowing instead of reaching. When holding a nice warm cup of tea, generally “you” (inner) perceive the heat of the “cup” (outer). But try receiving the heat instead perceiving, it and then sense the subtle change in how the energy moves.

Play with this! Next time you feel hungry, instead of thinking about what you want, ask your body what it wants to receive. In my experience, it’s an entirely different question, and the answer comes from a different place within. I may want a cookie, but my body may want to receive something else entirely.

How to receive? Well, it’s the opposite of shoving stuff into the body that we think it should have, “applying” food to hunger, emotions and boredom, and imposing restrictions and strenuous activities – all in order to push and pull and control and shape something away from what it is. Then we do the same with life itself, trying to form it into what we want it to be.

To receive is to open the senses and allow something to unfold within you. Sensually welcoming food into your body is a sacred act. The polar opposite of control, manipulation and restriction, the food then has a wholly different effect in your body. (I am certain this is true, whether one is underweight, overweight, or out of balance in any other way.) Food, like everything else, is there to serve me, not try to overcome my resistance to it.

Meals are so unbelievably pleasurable now that it takes me twice as long to eat half as much. (Now there’s something to ponder…) And, even after the meal, I continue to consciously receive the food. A bit of bloating? Receive it. Pain somewhere? Receive it. (A clue to going beyond pain?) Interestingly, receiving is a very feminine dynamic, while it’s the masculine that’s pushy and imposing. It’s definitely time for those two to work out a new balance within (yet one more reason for SES, but that’s another topic).

What if we received everything in life – every experience, every encounter, every act, every moment? How synchronistic, harmonious and abundant would our lives become? It’s like being the recipient of an absolutely perfect gift, over and over again, rather than being the one trying to figure out the right thing to give, how to present it, how to wrap it, whether it’s the right size, and all the other hassles that come with giving. What a sensual experience it is to receive the water, the air, a bath, the news, music, noise, neighbors, the abundance of every moment, the life in every breath. How incredible to feel it, and to feel myself receive and take it in. All of it.

Go for a walk and receive the path as it moves beneath your feet. Receive the sensations in your body as it moves. Receive the sight of the trees and the birdsongs within them. Receive the sunlight on your skin. That one’s easier because the sun is so big and bright and strong that we tend to perceive its light “coming to us.” Now imagine if your I Am was as big and radiant as the sun, constantly giving and giving and giving and giving, and all you had to do was receive. Yes, indeed, the I Am is for giving.

Receive the “bad” stuff too – the pain, the fat, the disappointment, the loneliness, everything. Receive everything and see what happens.

I believe we have come to the point where is more blessed to receive than to give, and here’s why: As you stand in the flow of your I Am, every single part of your reality is an opportunity to receive. Your energy, like time, moves through you, and all of creation is your own energy. You – stationary in this Now moment at the center of your reality – experience it all flowing through you, so what is there to resist? Let yourself perceive, open and receive!

As we unfold into our new life, it’s all about receiving, which is a fundamental shift in the way energy flows. In all our adventures as souled beings, it’s been about energy flowing out – seeking, searching, building, experiencing. Life has been about the outward expression, learning how to work with energy by pushing, pulling, directing, managing, limiting, growing, taking, stealing, and giving it. Until the moment we realize it is all our own.

To receive is to acknowledge that it is all yours. The human no longer has to direct, manage, limit, restrict, steer or affect the flow, because it’s all coming from the True Self, the I Am. The human needs only to receive. It’s no longer a dualistic “give and take” to keep the energy exchange in balance. When you’re receiving from yourself, the balance is already there.

Life then becomes a never-ending unfoldment – a constant receiving, blossoming, reintegrating back into Self, and unfolding again. This is the magic when you are aligned with Self, in absolute trust, constantly receiving all that comes; the alchemy of living the powerless life, without control or manipulation either for or against yourself. It is a constant becoming.

This is why you’re here – to discover what it’s like to live in abundant alignment with Self, to receive and experience the unending flow of your energy in expression. Receive it all.

Now, imagine. As you cultivate the art of receiving, it becomes possible to receive anything in any moment, from any reality, regardless of whether it’s in your current human perception. Energy is communication. It’s there for you to perceive and then receive in whatever form you choose. Sounds a lot like Merlin to me…

Absolutely!... Yes, yes and yes! Express My-Self is receive ME, receive My-Self. Be ME is Receive ME, Allow-ME, is BE My-Self in this biological body and in this "reality" too... Is Let me BE ME, My Real Own and Real Expression as human, "becaming" the Energy of my I AM, responding to IT, to ME...

Thanks Jean! I've also been experimenting with "sensual eating" for a while and my experience is something like what you write. It also instantly changes the relationship with the body from resistance to love and not as a mental concept but as an experience, it's so real. By the way, yes, I also note that I need less food. Consciousness "makes" everything richer and more abundant, the supply is therefore much more efficient .... Thank you for your sharing and your overall view. Sina
