I make art for the joy of it. My art is a celebration of life; it is my voice, my passion. It is happy, richly sensual, and full of feeling. Vivid colors and motion bring to life a sense of intimacy being present with my real and imagined experiences. I transform encounters, observations, or memories into the icons of my art using caricature to reflect the facts where they merge with intuition.
My inspiration comes from the wonder and joy of artistic process, tropical images, people of all kinds, parks and gardens in Cincinnati, the South Carolina low country, nature, and the Southwest.

My name is John Ballou, and I am Shaumbra, an architect, sculptor and a I am an all media artist, and have always had a great passion for the wilderness and it's inhabitants. My artwork brings the observer into the environment as a fellow creature who shares a particular niche with these creatures, rather than as an intruder looking in from the outside.
For this wildlife series I have worked with the ancient art of intaglio etching.
With engraving tools I render a web of patterns that eventually for the pictures. On the surface of dark ink that has been carefully applied, I etche through the ink or acrylic paint to a white under layer of white clay, thus leaving a white etched line or mark in a dark field. This allows for the maximum contrast of light to dark. This is what makes it possible for me to capture a three dimensional quality in this work.
I am also a sculptor of animals in bronze and other mediums. I have also just started to sculpt, lifesized, bronzes of peoples pet animals, in which I spend some time with the people and the pet. I then create a unique rendition of the personality of that person's pet.

Painting is my passion! It is a tangible way that I am able to share with others a piece of who I am...an expression of me. Each stroke is a verse...each verse comes together as one to tell yet another story. We may look at a painting and see a flower...a tree...but if "breathe in" that same painting we may see from a much different perspective...we may be able to begin to see the layers of unspoken feelings expressed on the canvas. My hope is that my passion is seen and felt through each piece I create.
I absolutely LOVE what I do and I hope it shows at least a little in each piece I create.

By the millennium shift I got a present from a friend; a pastel chalk set. I have just resigned my job as a leader of a company with some 70 employees, and was in the beginning of making a major change in my life.
I made a couple of pictures, but I felt there were other things I had to solve before I could find the time to sit down with a “hobby”.
One and a half year later, I was in Switzerland, having sold my car, house and all that was in it.
While thinking of what to do next, I began to explore the pastels more….
